WARNING If you want any of your homeworks back, my office hours next Friday (May 23rd) will be the last chance to get them. I will have all homeworks that I have graded during every office hours up to and including next Friday, then they're getting shredded.

Help Us Help You

Please preface your subject line with cs178:. This isn't absolutely required, but we'll be getting a lot of e-mail and if we can easily distinguish what's related to the class, we can get back to you sooner.

Address your e-mail to both TAs. You'll have a better chance of having your question answered more quickly.

We'll both be grading your homeworks, so you might want to read my grader policy.

General Tips

I was a CS178 TA last year. From that experience, the following might be useful:

Start early! Some of the assignments are pretty difficult, and you don't want to get surprised.
Go to office hours! Especially if you don't understand the algorithms you should implement (ooh that's a fragment).
Use whatever programming language you're familiar with! The class is designed with the assumption that you know how to code. The emphasis is on cryptology theory, not software engineering. So if you want to use brainfork (sed 's/or/uc/'), go for it.
Choose your paper topic early! Some topics are more popular than others, and all that implies. If you have an unusual topic, that's probably better than yet another analysis of [insert algorithm here] based on 50-year-old papers.

Take a look at last year's solutions. Some documents might not (ever) be available.

* Grading papers isn't absolute torture, but it's not the most fun in the world. To help relieve the tedium, I draw things like happy faces on exceptional papers. I'm such a poor artist that you might think my scrawlings are some form of punishment, so on this page I will make very clear what each tangled mess represents.
